Deliberations held at Himalayan Hospital to reduce Infant Mortality Rate

Dehradun, 3 Jun: Experts at the Himalayan Hospital, Jolly Grant, gathered today to discuss strategies to reduce the infant mortality rate. They underscored the significance of adequate prenatal care for expectant mothers. The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS) hosted a Continuing Medical Education (CME) program focusing on “Prevention of Stillbirth: Saving Unborn Lives”.

During the event, various approaches to diminishing infant mortality at birth were examined.

Speaking at the program, Chief Guest Dr. Rajendra Dobhal, Vice-Chancellor of Swami Rama Himalayan University, emphasized the necessity of providing comprehensive prenatal care to all pregnant women to avert stillbirths. He also called attention to the need for Rainbow Clinics geared towards caring for women during pregnancies following a stillbirth.

Dr. Ashok Deorari, Principal of HIMS, shared insights on quality perinatal care to help reduce infant mortality rates.

Guest of Honour, Dr. Tamkin Khan from Aligarh Muslim University and Secretary of the Stillbirth Society of India, elaborated on the Society’s ongoing efforts as a non-profit organization to curb infant mortality rates in the nation. The event included a case-based panel discussion on common pregnancy-related issues such as high blood pressure, fetal growth restriction, gestational diabetes mellitus, and intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy.

The session was spearheaded by Dr. Ruchira Nautiyal, Head of the Department and event organizer. Dr. Uma Rawat, Medical Officer from MCH and NHM, provided data on infant mortality rates in Uttarakhand. Dr. Smita Chandra discussed the role of histopathological examination of the placenta in cases of stillbirth.

The event also featured insights from notable attendees including Director of Health Services Dr. Hem Chandra Pandey, Dr. Mushtaq Ahmed, Dr. Enas Mushtaq, Dr. Chinmay Chetan, and Dr. Anil Rawat.

A brainstorming quiz for gynaecologists was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Purnima Upreti.

Senior faculty members from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at AIIMS Rishikesh, Doon Medical College, SSGRIMS and HS, and GMC Haldwani, actively participated in the CME.
